NORTON, Mass. - Facing the possibility of losing their spot in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, the Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team played Wheaton College (Mass.) to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon. Along with losses for Mount Holyoke College and Salve Regina, both of whom were just two points behind Coast Guard on the conference table entering the day's games, the result clinches the eighth seed in the tournament for the Bears, while Wheaton will likely finish their campaign as the fifth seed. The Bears will head into postseason play with a 2-10-6 (2-5-4 NEWMAC) record, while Wheaton moves on at 8-4-6 (4-2-4 NEWMAC).
The Bears finished the first half with three shot attempts on goal by
Isabella Brittian in the fourth minute,
Riley Vicinanzo in the 19th minute, and
Mia Forti in the 23rd minute. Wheaton also finished with three shots on target, which were all saved by
Emily Scharnitzky. The hosts were called for three fouls in the half while Coast Guard was whistled for none, and the Bears held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half saw Coast Guard direct three more shots towards the net.
Lulu Vlases attempted the first two in the 57th and 60th minutes, and
Arwen Wise made one last attempt at breaking the equalizer in the 87th minute. Scharnitzky stopped an additional five shots by the Lyons to bring her total on the day to eight, her most in a game since an 11-save performance vs. WPI on October 19th. The Lyons attempted more corner kicks by the game's end, getting all four of their chances in the half while Coast Guard took just one. The two teams were called for 12 fouls altogether during the final 45, with seven calls being against the Lyons and five going against Coast Guard.
The Bears now shift their focus to their the opening round of the NEWMAC playoffs, in which they'll travel to top-seeded #3 MIT on Tuesday, November 5th. Coast Guard fared well defensively in the regular season match-up, allowing one goal and being shut out by the then-#5 team in the nation.
