WORCESTER, Mass. - The Coast Guard Academy men's swimming & diving team opened their 2024-25 campaign strongly at WPI's annual season-opening quad meet. The Bears earned numerous individual wins to fuel their three dual wins on the day, defeating NEWMAC opponents in their hosts (217-76) and Babson (200-93), as well as an out-of-conference opponent in Brandeis (236-51).
Coast Guard took first place in the 200-yard medley relay thanks to the team of
Michael Carden,
John Kaleta,
Charles Gaines, and
Noah Reice, who earned individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly races.
Among the strong individual efforts in the competition for Coast Guard were those by 2024 CSCAA All-Americans
Sean Lyman and
Colin Twiss. Lyman placed first in three races - the 1,000-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, and 200-yard IM - while Twiss swam to wins in the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle races.
Other first-place finishes for the Bears included
Zachary McGowen in the 100-yard backstroke,
Blaise Minckler in the 200-yard breaststroke, and
Jordan Jansen in the 500-yard freestyle. Coast Guard would have another relay win in the 400-yard freestyle by Reice, Gaines, McGowen, and Twiss.
Next on the Bears' schedule is their first home dual meet of the season on Friday, November 8th, in which they'll be hosting fellow NEWMAC competitors Wheaton College. Wheaton is off to a 1-1 start to the season, losing their opener at Bentley, 111.5-150.5, but bouncing back at home vs. Bridgewater State, 131-85. The Lyons finished fifth overall at last season's conference championships.
