NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team opened their 2024-25 season with a 105-72 loss to Roger Williams on Tuesday night. The game began close but the Bears struggled to contain the Hawks offense, especially in the second half.
The game began with a competitive pace, as junior forward
Luke Farrell scored the Bears' first points. However, the Hawks quickly gained control, racing out to a 19-9 lead in just the first six minutes. The Bears responded with a 6-0 run, trimming the deficit to 19-15, highlighted by a strong driving layup from senior
Ben Yagey. However, Roger Williams continued to push the tempo, extending their lead to 17 points by halftime.
In the second half, both teams showcased explosive offensive performances. The Bears scored 45 points, but Roger Williams answered with 61, fueled by a 49.3% shooting performance. Despite finding some rhythm offensively, Coast Guard struggled to overcome the Hawks' efficient scoring and the game ended in a 105-72 defeat.
Farrell led the Bears with a double-double, posting 17 points and 10 assists, while senior
Declan Rooney contributed 13 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Coast Guard shot 41.1% from the field, a number they will look to improve going forward.
The Bears will look to bounce back next week when they visit crosstown rival Connecticut College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Luce Field House.
