NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team was defeated by NEWMAC rivals Smith College on Wednesday afternoon, 0-1. The Bears' record moves to 2-10-3 (2-5-1 NEWMAC), while Smith's improves to 6-8-1 (5-2-1 NEWMAC).
The Pioneers took the lead in the 13th minute after defender
Una Keller converted a penalty kick. The Bears had their chances to equalize before the halftime whistle, with four of their five shot attempts in the half being on target. One of those equalizing ties was taken by
Arwen Wise, but her effort was deflected by an impressive save from Pioneers goalkeeper
Skyler Smith. Smith held a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks while both teams were called for one foul during the opening 45 minutes.
Both teams attempted three shots in the second half, but Smith was unable to pad their lead, and Coast Guard couldn't equalize by the final whistle. The Bears would have more shots on-target in the half, holding a 6-5 advantage over their hosts in that regard. Forward
Riley Vicinanzo led the Bears with two shot attempts. Goalkeeper
Emily Scharnitzky finished the match with three saves.
Women's soccer's next match on Saturday, October 6th, brings them back home to Nitchman, where they'll take on Mount Holyoke College at noon. It'll be Senior Day for the Bears, who host a Lyons team who have played to a 3-4-5 (0-4-3 NEWMAC) record and will have faced Clark University on Wednesday evening before the game. Coast Guard is 15-8 vs. Mount Holyoke dating back to the 2000 season and have won their last ten match-ups.
