PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Coast Guard Academy men's soccer picked up a non-conference road win at Rhode Island College, besting the Anchormen by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 10-3-1, while RIC moves to 9-3-1.
Coast Guard was looking to get back on track after their 0-3 loss to Connecticut College earlier in the week. They entered their match on Saturday carrying some previous successes over their hosts, as they had won two of their last three games vs. the Anchormen. The only non-win was last year's result, a 0-0 tie at home.
It looked as though the game would go into halftime scoreless, but midfielder
Brennan King changed that with just seven seconds left before the break. Coast Guard was given a free kick after RIC midfielder
Cameron Chalue-Feeney was awarded a yellow card for disrupting a prior free kick attempt by midfielder
Micah Messner. Messner lined up just before half field and directed a high lob into the box, where it was headed out by an RIC defender. First-year midfielder
Nicholas Yorgason played it and passed it towards defender
Aidan Miles, who sent a low pass into the box where King was able to tap it in past Anchormen goalie
Elhadji Ndoye. It was King's third goal this season, while Miles and Yorgason were both credited with their first assists of the season on the play.
The Bears would extend their lead just a couple of minutes into the second half. Midfielder
Michael Porter played a pass to forward
Michael O'Brien, who then sent it to midfielder
Andres Villasana. Villasana tapped the ball ahead before running up and sending a line drive into the net for his second goal of the season, extending the Bears lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute. O'Brien notched his second assist of the year on the play, while Porter was credited with his first.
The final goal of the match would be scored with a little over ten minutes left to play. Forward
Jake Fish dribbled the ball up the left side of the box before passing it to King. King drew the goalkeeper towards him before he sent it past him and towards a wide-open O'Brien, who tapped it in to give the Bears some insurance in the 80th minute. It was O'Brien's fourth goal this season, the second-most on the team, while King earned his second assist and Fish earned his third.
Coast Guard held an 18-16 advantage in shot attempts, but both teams sent six on-target. The two teams were also even in corner kick attempts, with seven apiece. It was a physical game, more so for the Bears as they were called for 16 fouls compared to ten for Rhode Island College, but RIC was more severely reprimanded as they would be awarded five of the game's eight yellow cards.
Coast Guard men's soccer will stay in Rhode Island for their next game on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, returning to NEWMAC action at Salve Regina. The Bears are 3-5-3 dating back to the 2005 season versus Salve, but the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in their first game against each other as conference foes and Coast Guard took a 3-0 win in their 2022 match-up. The Seahawks are 7-7-1 (2-1-1 NEWMAC) after defeating Clark, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
