CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team was beaten by fifth-ranked MIT, 0-1, on Wednesday night. The Bears move to 2-8-3 (2-3-1 NEWMAC), while MIT improves to 12-1-1 (6-0 NEWMAC).
Coast Guard was looking for its first win over the Engineers since a 2-1 win at Cambridge on October 15th, 2002. Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half. MIT held a 9-1 advantage in shot attempts, with
Lulu Vlases' try for the Bears going off the crossbar. Coast Guard's
Emily Scharnitzky made three saves during the first 45.
The game remained locked at nil until the 79th minute. MIT's
Arianna Doss took a long pass from
Sasha Ceol and got it past Scharnitzky. Coast Guard was unable to equalize before the final whistle. The Bears mustered just one shot in the second half, the attempt stemming again from Vlases. MIT finished the game with 21 shots on goal, eight of which were on target. Scharnitzky made seven saves in the match, tying for the second-most this season for the senior goalie.
Bears women's soccer will host WPI on Saturday, October 19th for a noon kick-off in their next match. The Engineers are 6-2-4 (3-0-2 NEWMAC) and played to a 1-1 draw in their last game against the Bears.
