Women's Soccer Falls to WPI, 1-2

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  Coast Guard women's soccer lost to visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 1-2, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears move to 2-9-3 (2-4-1 NEWMAC), while WPI improves to 7-3-4 (4-1-2 NEWMAC).

Neither team was able to score during the first 45 minutes of play. WPI got seven shots off while Coast Guard mustered three, the first two of which went out high while the third, which was attempted by senior forward Riley Vicinanzo, was saved by Lili Hellerman. The Bears held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks, and both teams were whistled for six fouls each.

It took until the 55th minute for the scoreless stalemate to be broken. Junior forward Mia Forti saved a deflected pass from going out of bounds and then nudged the ball into the box to sophomore midfielder Lulu Vlases, who sent a low shot past the goalie. It was Vlases' first goal of the season and the second assist of the year for Forti.

WPI wasted little time getting the game evened up again after Katie Adiletta provided the tying goal in the 60th minute. It didn't take long from there for the Engineers to take the lead on a score by Rian Fadden in the 68th minute, who was assisted on the effort by Jess English. Coast Guard was unable to equalize before the final whistle.

WPI attempted 17 shots to Coast Guard's ten, resulting in an 11-save game for senior goalie Emily Scharnitzky. Coast Guard finished the game with seven corner kicks and were called for ten fouls in the second half, putting their total for the match at 16.

Bears women's soccer will be heading to Smith College in Northhampton, Mass. on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd for their next match, set for a 3 p.m. kick-off. Coast Guard has a 9-13-1 record vs. the Pioneers dating back to the 2000 season but are enjoying more recent success with wins in their last three match-ups, taking last year's game, 1-0; Forti scored the lone goal in that game, for her fourth of the season at the time, assisted on the play by Vicinanzo. Smith has played to a 5-7-1 (4-1-1 NEWMAC) record this season and will have faced Babson College on Saturday afternoon before their match against Coast Guard.
