NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior
Colin Twiss broke two of the Roland Pool records as the men's team dropped their first dual meet of the season against perennial NCAA powerhouse MIT. MIT won with a score of 140-97 and this dropped the Bears to 6-1.
Twiss won both the 200 and 500 yard freestyles in pool records, breaking records held by MIT's Bouke Edskes. Twiss went 1:40.01 in the 200, breaking the old record by over a second and half, and 4:41.70 in the 500, lowering the record by a second. Twiss also anchored the 400 freestyle relay coming from three seconds behind to win the event for the Bears. The relay team of first year Noah Reice, senior Jake Kim, sophomore Charles Gaines and Twiss finished in 3:07.76.
Reice earned an individual win of his own with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 46.50. Joining in with an event win was junior Sean Lyman who nearly broke a 14 years old pool record in the 1000 freestyle in 9:39.64. First year Blaise Minckler trailed Lyman in the 1000 with a season best 9:49.32 to finish second. Minckler returned in the 200 breaststroke for his own win in a quick 2:06.53.
MIT made its mark with a new pool record in the 200 Individual Medley for first year Jason Wang, who lowered the record to 1:52.48.
The Bears resume action on January 13, at 1:00 pm against the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.
