Keogh dominates three events, Bears improve to 10-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The women's Swimming and Diving team improved to 10-2 against Wellesley College on Friday night, matching the program's highest dual meet win total. The Bears won 150-130 over the Blue in a NEWMAC conference match-up, highlighted by a series of multiple event winners.

Junior Grace Keogh continued her second semester hot streak with three wins in her events. Grace won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.19, five seconds faster than her nearest opponent. She would later return to win both the 100 free, in a season best 53.74, and the 100 butterfly (58.62).

First year Madelyn Paxton had her best meet as a Bear winning three events of her own. Paxton came from behind to win the 100 backstroke in her season best 59.71, marked by a speedy second 50 yards in the race. Madelyn won the 200 backstroke in 2:09.72 as well as the 200 Individual Medley in 2:10.32, both season best times. Fellow first year, Megan Doubrava pitched in with two wins of her own. Megan won the 200 butterfly in 2:11.67 and followed by classmate Tessa Breitbart (2:13.34) as well as the 500 free in 5:19.39.

Adding to the success of the first year class was Jaida Lippy, who won the 1000 free in 10:58.98, followed by another first year, Zoe Suhajda (11:07.91). This 1-2 combo of Lippy and Suhajda has finished in that order 5 times on the 2023-24 season. Senior captain, Tamara Wheater won the 50 free in 25.52.

The race of the evening was the 200 breaststroke. Wellesley sophomore Kavita Sekhon and Coast Guard junior Ellie Hiestand battled for the entirety of the race with both women eclipsing the Roland Pool record in the end. Sekhon narrowly touched out Hiestand in 2:23.72. Hiestand set her own lifetime personal record in the race of 2:23.72. The old record stood at 2:24.23.

The women will look to break their win total next Saturday February 3, on Senior Day against Clark University at 2:00 pm.
