BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Men's Basketball Team took on Babson last night, falling by just one after a close battle with the Beavers.
Babson got on the board first with a layup, but Coast Guard answered back quickly with a three by
Declan Rooney. The Bears held the lead for about two minutes before the Beavers controlled again. It continued on like that until the six minute mark when CGA tied it up off a tip by
Cameron Brown. They then took the lead from a
Mitch Shettles jumper. The Bears held on until the break, leading 42-36.
Coast Guard got its first points of the second half by Rooney, now leading by eight, their largest lead of the game thus far. The Bears tried to cut into the lead several times in the early parts of the second, but the Bears continued scoring, at one point going up by 10.
Into the final minutes of the game, Babson started to get close. With a couple of threes and a jumper, the game was tied at 71 with just under three minutes to go.
The Bears found themselves down with 1:50 to go before Rooney knocked down a three, putting CGA up by one.
Ben Yagey added another to the lead with a made free throw with 18 seconds left in the game.
With 12 seconds left on the clock, Babson had the ball, making a layup and drawing a foul. The Bears now down by one, they were unable to pull off the last second win, falling with a final of 76-75.
Rooney led the Bears in scoring and rebounds, recording a double-double on the night. He had 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Elijah Parent put up 14 points, followed by
Mitch Shettles with 13 and
Ben Yagey with 12.
CGA is now 11-6 overall and 4-4 in conference. Coast Guard will now host Emerson on January 24th at 5:30 PM.
