After trailing by as many as 12 points, Coast Guard men's basketball was able to secure a victory on the road vs Springfield to reach 10 wins. The close-fought loss drops the Springfield Pride to 5-9 (2-3 NEWMAC).
The Bears shot just 1-14 from three and netted just 23 points in the 1st half but they came out storming in the 2nd. Springfield's 11 point lead quickly dwindled as CGA's shots started to fall. Coast Guard was led on this run by domination on the glass from junior forward
Cameron Brown and sophomore forward
Luke Farrell. Farrell finished with a game leading 13 rebounds and Brown had 10, 5 of which came early in the 2nd half. Junior guard
Declan Rooney hit a second chance corner three with just over 15 minutes on the clock to tie the game at 37, the first tie since 0-0. Two minutes later, sophomore guard
Elijah Parent hit a floater to give the Bears their first lead of the game and cap off a 16-3 2nd half run.
Springfield and Coast Guard went back and forth with the lead for the next six minutes until sophomore guard
Mitch Shettles was fouled on a three point attempt with the Bears trailing by two. Shettles calmly buried all three to give the Bears the lead. Following the free throws,
Declan Rooney extended the Bears lead to three with a hustle steal and made layup on a Springfield pass attempt.
The dagger for Coast Guard came from the hands of
Mitch Shettles with a clutch three pointer to put the Bears up six with just under 1:30 remaining on the clock.
10-4 Coast Guard (3-2 NEWMAC) will look to keep the winning ways rolling Saturday with a home game vs Wheaton at 1:00pm.
