Volleyball Dominates in Day One of Haverford Tourney

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Volleyball started off the season with a bang as they went 2-0 on the day, taking down Lebanon Valley and Stockton in day one of the Haverford Tournament.

Coast Guard faced off against Lebanon Valley in the first game, taking down the Flying Dutchmen in three sets.

Despite LVC getting the first point of the first set, CGA remained in the lead until the end when the game was tied at 28. However, the Bears still didn't let the Flying Dutchmen take the lead, ultimately downing them, 31-29.

CGA dominated the second set, 25-15, before another close set in the third. Once again, Lebanon Valley scored first, but Coast Guard was determined to come out on top as LVC would only have one more lead before CGA took the 25-22 win.

Coast Guard led in every category with 63.5 points, 48 kills, eight aces, seven blocks, 46 assists and 50 digs.

Shannon Shaw led the Bears in kills with 15, followed by Allie Wildsmith with 10. Elizabeth Atkinson recorded four blocks, while Shaw and Wildsmith had three a piece. Kaela France led CGA in aces with three and in digs with 15. Maeve Duffin recorded 44 assists, leading the Bears in game one.

Game two, Coast Guard faced off against Stockton University, taking three out of four sets.

In the first set, CGA took the lead from the very first point and never gave it up. Despite how close it was, the Bears came out on top 25-23. The second set was the only one Coast Guard gave up all day. CGA scored the first three points but was unable to hold on to the back-and-forth battle, falling 25-23.

The Bears bounced back in set number three, once again in a close fight to the end. They came out on top 27-25. To seal the deal, CGA won set number three in a much easier fashion getting the 25-16 win.

Wildsmith led the Bears in kills with 12, followed by Shaw and Atkinson with 11 each. Duffin had four aces and 41 assists in game two. Atkinson led with three blocks while France had 24 digs.

Coast Guard will be back at it in day two of the tournament, taking on Haverford at 11 AM and Augsburg at 1 PM.
