Volleyball Finishes the Haverford Tourney in a Split

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Volleyball started the final day of the Haverford Tournament with a 3-1 win over the host team. Bears would then battle their way to five sets but just fall to Augsburg 3-2.

In set one of game one, Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Fords right away. While Haverford would get within a couple points of Coast Guard, the Bears would ultimately keep their lead the entire set and secure the win 25-23.

In set two, while the Bears would take the lead first, they would not be able to keep it. They found themselves down by as much as four at one point. However, they would take back the lead at 20-19. In the end of set two, Haverford would win 26-24. Although, this would be the only set they would win. Coast Guard would win the next three sets in a row.

Set three was a back-and-forth battle for most of the set. Bears would walk away with it in the end for a score of 25-17. In set four, Coast Guard would completely dominate and win 25-12 to secure the 3-1 win over Haverford.

Tournament MVP Shannon Shaw and Sophia Galdamez led their team in kills with 14 a-piece. Allie Wildsmith and Sarah Somer followed with 10 kills each. Kalea France led her team in aces with four and in digs recording 33. Coast Guard's setter Maeve Duffin led her team in assists with 42.

In game two, the Bears would fight until the very last point, taking the game all the way to five sets.

Bears jumped out to a three-point lead in the first set, but would ultimately drop set one to the Auggies. In set two, both teams would each take turns grabbing ahold of the lead, but Coast Guard would ultimately clench set two 25-23.

Set three would be another close one, but the Bears would fall at the end 25-23. However, the Bears were not going down without a fight. Set four was close once again and it seemed like anyone could win it. The Bears would fight and fight until they took set four 26-24.

The final set was a nail-biter and the score would become tied four times in the 15-point match. Unfortunately, the Bears would fall in the final set 15-11. The Bears never gave up in game two and showed grit all the way until the end.

Shaw led her team in kills with 18 followed by Wildsmith with 14 and Galdamez with 11. France led her team with 22 digs while Carmen Zipf had four aces and 20 digs. Duffin led her team in assists with 48.

Coast Guard Volleyball will hit the road once again to play Westfield State this Tuesday, Sept. 5th at 6 PM.
