Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. - Softball hosted Wesleyan (Conn.) in a midweek doubleheader where the Bears' bats were on fire, taking game one, 6-4, and game two, 12-1.
Game one, the first three Bears runs were scored off of sacrifice flies. In the bottom of the first, Katie Becker flew out to left field, scoring Christine Carey. In the bottom of the third, Julia Breidenthal flew out to right, scoring Carey. Isabelle Shroyer flew out to left to score Lewandowki in the bottom of the fourth. Following Shroyer's sac fly, Natalie Beck singled and Mariah Dewey tripled to drive in two more.
The Bears did not allow the Cardinals a run until the fifth inning. Wesleyan put up four in the top half of the inning, but were answered by a run driven in by Carey in the bottom of the sixth to add to Coast Guard's lead. CGA took the win, 6-4.
Carey had three hits in four at-bats and Coast Guard had nine hits total in game one. Carey also recorded a stolen base.
In game two, it was a defensive battle for the first two innings as neither team scored. The first run was put up by Wesleyan in the top of the third. However, it would be the only run they would score for the rest of the game as the flood gates opened and CGA scored eight in the home half.
Carey and Selena Serna both recorded two RBIs in the fifth, while Shoyer, Bridget Bartz, Beck and Dewey all had one a piece.
The bottom of the fourth, the Bears drove in the four clinching wins. Emma Behel singled to right to score Maura Murphy, Grace Beardsley double to left to score Veronica Krystofik and Beck scored Behel.
Dana Walker and the Bears defense only allowed the Cardinals a hit in the top of the fifth to close out the game with a dominating 12-1 win.
Dewey had three hits at four at-bats, followed by Carey and Lillia Farlow with two hits in three at-bats. Coast Guard had a total of 13 hits in game two. Walker recorded four strikeouts and only allowed two hits, throwing 36 strikes in 48 pitches.
Coast Guard will begin conference play on April 1st at Springfield, on the road at Smith.
