Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. - Softball hosted Roger Williams for its home opener on Tuesday, taking both games of the doubleheader.
Game one, the Bears came out swinging as Christine Carey hit a homer in the bottom of the first, giving CGA a quick 1-0 lead. It was a battle of the defenses for the next two innings as both teams got hits, but left runners on.
In the top of the fourth, Roger Williams tied the game at one. However, Coast Guard answered back in the bottom of the fifth off a double by Mariah Dewey that scored Veronica Krystofik, giving the Bears the lead and ultimately the 2-1 win.
Isabelle Shroyer only allowed the Hawks three hits. She also recorded three strikeouts, allowing only one run. Carey recorded two hits in her two at-bats.
Game two started out with more sparks by the Bears. With two runners on in the bottom of the first and no outs, Julia Breidenthal tripled to bring in the first two runs of the game for CGA.
In the next at-bat, Shroyer brought home Breidenthal and gave the Bears an early 3-0 lead.
It was a pitcher's dual up until the fifth inning as both teams struggled to get hits and bring in runs.
The bottom of the fifth saw the Bears' final run as Dewey hit a solo bomb to put CGA top, 4-0, later becoming the final score.
In the circle, Dana Walker recorded eight strikeouts for the Bears while shutting out the Hawks.
Coast Guard will host Albertus Magnus on March 23rd at 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM
