MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bears repeated as Jayden Szkirka Memorial Championship winners this weekend in a meet formerly called the CT Cup. This marks a streak that dates back to the inception of the contest in 2015. The men (1034 points) held off cross town rival Connecticut College (956 points) and were able to win a number of events.
Junior Colin Twiss won two events over the two-day meet, with victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles in times of 1:40.02 and 4:35.52, respectively. Joining Twiss in winning twice was first year, Joh Kaleta, who swept the breaststroke events with a 56.51 in the 100 and 2:03.80 in the 200. Fellow first year swimmer, Noah Reice chipped in with a win in the 200 Individual Medley (1:54.09) and two runner up finishes in the 100 breaststroke (56.62) and the 100 butterfly (49.78). First Year Blaise Minckler won the 400 IM in 4:08.78.
All-American Honorable Mention, junior Sean Lyman, led from start to finish in the 1650 free and a time of 16:12.20, followed by Twiss in second (16:16.57). The Bears won each of the relays as well.
The meet started with a win for the 200 free relay team of Reice, Twiss, sophomore Victor Parks, and senior Jake Kim (1:24.84). Friday evening closed with a win in the 400 medley relay and the time of 3:25.22 for first year Cole Carden, Kaleta, Reice and Twiss. Saturdays relays were also wins for Coast Guard. The 200 medley relay team of Carden, Kaleta, sophomore Charles Gaines, and Kim clocked in at 1:35.38. The 400 free relay team of Reice, Gaines, Kim, and Twiss closed the weekend with a win in 3:06.75.
The Bears are off for the remainder of the semester and will resume competition in January when they host MIT on January 6 at 11:00 am.
