Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Football hosted Norwich on homecoming weekend, remaining undefeated at home after dominating the Cadets, 52-17.
The Bears saw their first scoring opportunity come at the end of their first drive.
Brennan Holt was put on the spot, looking to give CGA the early lead. The freshman wasn't able to score, missing his first field goal of the season.
Coast Guard was able to take the lead not too long after, however. On their second play of their second drive,
Joey Armentrout pitched it to
Harrison Hensley who threw down field to
Broock Desta for a 50-yard touchdown. After the extra point by Holt, CGA was leading, 7-0.
With just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Norwich got its first points, coming off a field goal. Just about half way through the second quarter, the Bears pushed their lead to 11 off a three-yard run from Armentrout. Following the extra point, Coast Guard was leading Norwich, 11-3.
On their next drive, the Cadets scored their first touchdown of the game, cutting the Bears' lead to four.Â
CGA answered back not too long after when Armentrout found
James Patz for a 25-yard TD, the Bears now leading 21-11 with just over two minutes remaining in the half.Â
The Bears were putting together a good drive, but time ran out before they were able to capitalize. At the break, CGA was holding its 10 point lead.
Norwich received the ball coming out of the half, scoring a touchdown, the Bears still leading 21-17.Â
In the first drive of the second half for CGA, Armentrout threw and interception and had the tackle. Three plays later,
Hayden Anderson had an interception for the Bears in the end zone.Â
CGA drove it all the way down the field and on fourth and two, were unable to convert. The game remained at 21-17 with six and a half to go in the third.Â
A three-and-out for Norwich and a short punt gave the Bears the ball at the Cadet 43 yard line.Â
The Bears ran nine plays, capped off by a one-yard rushing touchdown by Armentrout. After Holt's made extra point, the Bears were leading, 28-17.
Following the TD, the
Grant Bayesa recovered a fumble on the kickoff, the Bears getting the ball at Norwich's 30. CGA was able to capitalize as
Harrison Hensley rushed for a 15-yard TD. The Bears led, 35-17, with 1:31 remaining in the third.
On Norwich's next drive, they turned it over again as
Noah Greene intercepted a pass. Coast Guard took over at its own 45. After 11 plays Holt came on to kick a 36-yard field goal, adding to the Bears' lead.
The Cadets were only able to get three plays off before Anderson got his second interception of the day. After four plays and a flag on Norwich,
Broock Desta rushed for a four-yard TD. Holt with another made extra point gave the Bears 45-17 lead.
After strong defense by CGA, NU turned it over on downs. With
Dennis O'Shea now in a quarterback for Coast Guard, he rushed it for a 29-yard TD. With just under four minutes left in the game, CGA was leading, 52-17.
On the final play of the game,
Jonathan Clifford intercepted it for the Bears. CGA went on to win 52-17.
Armentrout went on to have 207 passing yards, two passing and two rushing TDs. Desta led in receiving with 93 yards and one touchdown, followed by Patz with 83 yards and a touchdown. Hensley led in rushing with 224 yards and a TD. Holt had six extra points, now making it 37 consecutive PATs, and a field goal.Â
CGA now stands at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference.
Coast Guard will hit the road and face Maritime next Saturday at 2 PM.Â
