NEW LONDON, Conn. - Volleyball hosted Emerson, taking down the Lions in four sets on a historic day for
Maeve Duffin and
Kaela France.
Senior Duffin reached 1,000 career assists on her Senior Day and Junior France hit 1,000 career digs. Duffin's milestone came in the first set, while France reached hers in the third.Â
After a slow start for CGA, they were able to take set one with a final of 26-24. The Bears were playing catchup for a majority of the first, before tying it up at 18. From then, it was a back-and-forth battle to reach the winning point.Â
The second set, the Bears found themselves down by as much as seven at one point. They were able to rally to bring it back within two, but it wasn't enough as they ultimately dropped the set, 25-21.
Coast Guard took control in the third set. They only trailed one time, which came in the very beginning at 2-1. From then, CGA led the rest of the way, even by as much as eight. The Bears took the third, 25-16.
Set four was another close battle. There were six ties and seven lead changes. Late in the set, Emerson was up 19-18. Coast Guard then tied it up at 19 off a kill my
Shannon Shaw. With CGA needing a push,
Courtney Shire came in to serve. She was able to produce two aces, on top of errors by the Lions and two kills by
Sophia Galdamez to give the Bears six more unanswered points and secure the 25-19 victory.Â
Allie Wildsmith led the Bears with 13 kills, followed by
Shannon Shaw with 12 and Galdamez with 11. Duffin went on to lead all players with 39 assists, while France led both teams with 25 digs.
Elizabeth Atkinson recorded four blocks, followed by Galdamez with three.
Carmen Zipf led with three aces.
CGA now stands at 14-7 overall and 4-3 in conference.
Coast Guard will host Salve Regina on October 17th at 7 PM.
