NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Women's Swimming and Diving team easily bested the Merchant Marine Academy team by a score of 191-108. This extends their winning streak against the Mariners to 22 years straight, when the women's team began in 2000. The meet took place on Senior Day, when the seniors were recognized with the men's team seniors.
The women said farewell and following seas to captains Meghan Bolin and Katie Dennin, along with their classmates, Lindsey Blake, Missy Rowell, Taylor Young and Natalie Yurgil.
The women won all but three events in the home contest. Continuing her distance dominance was Lindsey Blake who won both the 1000 and 500 freestyles, in times of 11:02.56 and 5:22.65 respectively. Fellow seniors Katie Dennin and Meghan Bolin chipped with individual wins of their own. Dennin winning the 100 backstroke in 1:00.21, and Bolin hanging on to win the 200 butterfly in a solid 2:20.28.
First year Masen Karsten continued her successful inaugural season in the sprint events, winning the 50 free in 24.81. Sophomore Grace Keogh won three events, the 100 butterfly (58.87), the 200 free (1:56.05) and the 100 free (53.75). Fellow sophomore Tailyn Schaufelberger was a two-event winner winning both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.87) and the 200 IM (2:15.40).
Book ending the swimming events were wins in the relay events. The 200 medley team of Isabel Robey Schaufelberger, Keogh and Karsten outpaced the field at 1:50.79. Ending the successful day on a high note was the 400 freestyle relay team of Lindsey Blake, junior Tamara Wheater, Keogh, and Karsten in a time of 3:41.89.
The women improve to 8-3 and bettering the program best for total wins in a single season. They will close out the home meet season Friday against NEWMAC member Wellesley on Friday 1/20 at 6:00 pm.
