Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The U.S. Coast Guard Academy football team forced six turnovers while Spencer McMillion carried the ball 19 times for 126 yards and two scores to lead the Bears to a 22-16 non-conference victory over visiting Curry College at Cadet Memorial Field. Coast Guard evened its record at 1-1 with the win, while the Colonels fell to 0-2 for the season.
The Bears got out to a 10-lead on a two-yard surge from McMillion and a 40-yard field goal from Finnegan Hall in the opening period, only to see Curry take a 13-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. Gabe DeSouza got the Colonels on the board with a seven-yard touchdown reception with 2:16 left in the first, which was followed by a botched two-point conversion attempt before Montie Quinn broke off a 69-yard touchdown run midway through the second.
The Bears got the ball to start the second half and wasted no time getting on the board as McMillion broke through several tackles at the line on his way to a 70-yard scoring run on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Amr Baadani later scored what proved to be the game-winning TD on a 43-yard reception with 37 seconds left in the third.
Five of the six turnovers the Bears forced in the game were interceptions, two of which were pulled in by Logan Morris. David Bolin, Connor Healy, and Jacob Wagner had one each. Healey also finished the day with a game-high 12 tackles, which was two better than Garrett Bragg's 10 takedowns.
Joey Armentrout was 13-for-26 for 190 yards and one touchdown under center for Coast Guard. Baadani pulled in six passes for 88 yards and one score.
The Bears will be back on the field next Saturday, September 17, when they travel to Nichols College. The kickoff is set for noon in Dudley, Massachusetts.
