Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass. – Coast Guard rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh of the second game for a come-from-behind 3-2 win and salvage a split of the Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at WPI. The Engineers won the opener 9-5.
Coast Guard is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC while WPI is 11-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday when they host Emerson in a NEWMAC doubleheader at noon. The games were scheduled for Saturday, but moved due to poor field conditions.
GAME ONE – WPI 9, COAST GUARD 5
WPI scored three runs in both the second and third to take a 7-1 lead and never looked back in the 9-5 win.
Selena Serna was 3 for 3 with a double for Coast Guard while Mariah Dewey and Isabelle Shroyer each had two hits for the Bears.
Coast Guard struck first in the first on an RBI single by Shroyer before WPI tied it in the home half.
The Engineers took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the second as all three runs scored on a bunt and throwing error for the 4-1 lead.
Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo's two-run single in the sixth cut the deficit to 8-3.
Dewey blasted a two-run homer to left, her first of the season, in the seventh to close the scoring.
Shroyer (2-4) allowed four earned runs in the first four innings and took the loss for Coast Guard.
GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 3, WPI 2
Lilia Farlow's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored pinch runner Jackie Carter to cap a two-run rally as the Bears scored twice in the inning and held on for the 3-2 win.
Amanda Moore (4-2) went the distance and scattered seven this and allowed two runs while walking two and fanning five to get the win.
Dewey and Shroyer each had two more hits in game two for Coast Guard.
WPI would take a 1-0 lead in the third as Lindsay Ambrosino stole third and scored on a throwing error.
The Bears tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Christine Carey scoring Dewey, who had tripled.
Sydney Russell's RBI single in the sixth gave WPI a 2-1 lead
Coast Guard tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Shroyer scoring Dewey, who led off the inning with a single.
