Box Score New London, CT – Hunter Carey's one yard touchdown run in the second overtime clinched the victory for Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), as the Engineers defeated Coast Guard 30-24 (3-6 / 1-4 NEWMAC) on Cadet Memorial Field. With the game tied at 17 at the end of regulation, WPI did not take long to reclaim the lead as Isaac Frederique hit Jay Mezzo for a 25 yard touchdown on a reverse pass on the very first play of overtime. Coast Guard would respond when it was their turn on offense as sophomore Joey Armentrout found freshman Broock Desta for an 11 yard touchdown pass to even the score at 24.
Coast Guard was up first on offense for the second overtime period, but on 4th and 1 from the 16 yard line Finnegan Hall's 33 yard field goal attempt was blocked. WPI's offense took over and handed the ball 5 straight times to Carey to reach the Bears 1 yard line before his touchdown on the sixth play of the drive sealed it for the Engineers.
WPI jumped out to a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter after Carey caught an 8 yard touchdown pass from Dante Coccagnia. On the subsequent drive, Coast Guard's punter's 58 yard kick went out of bounds at the WPI five yard line. On the Engineers first play junior Ryan Vigo intercepted Stephen McDonald and returned it to the WPI three yard line. Senior Spencer McMillion ran it in from three yards out and the Bears trimmed the lead to 10-7. The Bears then reeled off ten straight points - a 26 yard field goal from Hall, and a six yard touchdown pass from Armentrout to sophomore Jimmy Patz with 8:04 remaining in the contest that gave the Bears their first lead 17-10. Two drives later, Coccagnia found Frederique open in the Bears secondary for a 45 yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 17 and that is where the score remained at the end of regulation.
On the day, a balanced WPI offense totaled 425 yards (213 rushing and 212 passing), while the Bears had 395 yards. Both teams had a 100 yard rusher with Carey tallying 118 yards on 25 carries, while the Bears' McMillion again eclipsed the century mark with 120 yards. Armentrout was impressive on the ground as well, totaling 92 yards to go along with his 171 yards through the air. Desta went over 100 yards receiving for the Bears with 102 yards on 10 receptions. Defensively the Bears were led by junior Logan Morris who racked up 12 tackles and senior Conner McGuire who recorded 11 stops on the day. Sophomore Nico Berrios recovered a fumble for the Bears, who had 2 takeaways on the day, while sophomore Tyler Jones and senior Andrew Schad each recorded a sack.
Coast Guard concludes it's season next Saturday, November 12th, 2022 as they travel to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the annual battle for the Secretaries Cup. The game kicks off at 12pm EST and is slated to be broadcast nationwide on ESPN3.
