Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Coast Guard Academy Volleyball team fell to Springfield College in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening. The Bears end the season with a final record of 18-8; Springfield improves to 18-8.
Senior Noelle Tursky led the Bears with seven kills, followed by Allie Wildsmith with six, Shannon Shaw with five, and Elizabeth Atkinson with four. Tursky added nine assists and three aces on the night; Maeve Duffin led the Bears with 12 assists and nine digs. Kaela France added five digs. Sarah Somer was a force at the net defensively, securing six blocks for the Bears. Wildsmith also had five blocks, and Atkinson four.
Springfield started the match with a kill and two aces to go up 3-1. Laila Baameur then rattled off three serves in a row to tie the set at 3-3. The Bears would tie the match again at 5-5 on a kill by Shaw. The Pride and Bears went back and forth, but the Pride maintained a steady 3-5 point lead. However, the lead was extended to six on a kill by Maeve Voltz, giving Springfield the 21-15 lead. The Bears would bring it back to 23-21 on an ace from Wildsmith and a kill from Tursky, but the Pride took the set, 25-21.
Set two started in Coast Guard's favor with a kill from Atkinson. The Bears battled, but multiple runs by the Pride proved to be too much, and Springfield won the set, 25-17.
Set three was back and forth, seeing a 10-10 tie arise on a kill from Claire Portigue. A block by Atkinson and Portigue gave the Bears a 12-11 lead and forced a Springfield timeout. Coast Guard took the lead at 17-15 on a kill from Atkinson and a block from Atkinson and Somer. Another two ties emerged at 20-20 and 21-21, with the Bears fighting to continue the match and their season. However, Springfield would score the next four points, giving the Pride the set and match win, 25-21.
Tonight's match was the last career match for seniors Noelle Tursky and Claire Portigue. The Bears end the season with an 18-8 (5-5 NEWMAC) record.
