Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Rested up following a Bye Week, the Springfield College Pride (3-2, 1-0 in NEWMAC) got their potent triple option offense rolling as they racked up 465 rushing yards on 76 carries, defeating the Coast Guard Academy Football team (2-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) on Parents Weekend at Cadet Memorial Field in New London.
Coast Guard's opening drive started at their own 23 yard line, and on 3rd and 10 sophomore Joey Armentrout scampered 47 yards to set the Bears up at the Springfield 30 yard line. The drive stalled and ended when the Pride dug in and on 3rd and 9, then Armentrout's pass was intercepted by Springfield's Aidan Lewin who brought the ball back to midfield. The Pride went right to work as they marched 51 yards on seven plays, with Arsen Shtefan scoring from one yard out to give the Pride a 7-0 lead.
The Bears defense dug in on the next Springfield drive and a 14 yard punt by Christian Hutra set the Bears up on the Springfield 35-yard line. Again the Springfield defense answered as Bryan Feliciano picked off Armentrout on the first play at the 6 yard line and returned it 50 yards to the Coast Guard 44 yard line. The Pride kept the ball on the ground marching 44 yards on 10 plays with Joseph Cannizzaro scoring from 3 yards out to push the Springfield lead to 14-0.
Following a three-and-out by Coast Guard the Pride methodically marched 69 yards on twelve plays with Arsen Shtefan running it in from two yards out, his second touchdown of the day. A mishandled punt snap on the next Bears drive set up Springfield on the 18 yard line and Joseph Cannizzaro added his second touchdown of the day to push the Pride lead to 28-0. David Wells rushed 42 yards for a touchdown on the next Springfield drive, and the Pride took a 35-0 lead into halftime.
Opening up the second half, Springfield went 99 yards on their second drive of the second half. The big play being Blane Hart's 58-yard reception, the Pride's only pass completion of the day. Wells added his second touchdown of
the day from one yard out to cap off the drive. Armando Torres would then score for the Pride from one yard out on the next Pride possession to push the score to 49-0.
A break for the Bears came following a mishandled punt return by C.J. Lavery. Sophomore Jonathan Clifford fell on the loose ball and the Bears had 1st and 10 at the Pride 28-yard line. Coast Guard finally got on the board as senior Jacob Wagner completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to first-year Broock Desta.
On the day the Springfield amassed 523 yards of total offense, while limiting Coast Guard to just 237. Springfield was 6/10 on 3rd down conversion and managaed to pick off Armentrout three times on the afternoon. For the Bears, Clifford had two fumble recoveries. Both teams continue NEWMAC play next weekend. Coast Guard will stay home, playing host to Catholic University for Homecoming Weekend at 1pm EST.
