Women's Soccer Battles With Emerson in NEWMAC Contest

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. -- In an action packed first half of play, the US Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team did not match Emerson College blow for blow in a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday evening.

All four goals were scored in the first forty minutes of gameplay, with the first coming off a tough rebound from an Emily Scharnitzky initial save. Emerson's initial shooter, Gina Lukoskie, was able to gather the rebound and find Simone Barragan-Shaw for the score just four minutes into the contest.

After the opening barrage, scoring action slowed and both teams settled into an ebb and flow. That would not last long, however. In a wild three minute span, both Coast Guard and Emerson scored a combined three goals on three consecutive possessions.

The 38th minute saw Emerson senior Cali Bruce streak down the sideline, receiving a pass from Ainslee MacQuarrie and shortly after scoring passed the dive of Scharnitzky. On the very next possession, Emerson pulled out to a 3-0 lead when Brittney Righetti scored.

The Bears would cut into the lead on the very next possession when senior Anna Carleton netted a goal off a feed from sophomore Riley Vincinanzo in the 40th minute.

Coming out of the break, the Bears settled in and posted a stronger defensive front, protecting Scharnitzky. The Bears defense was able to hold the Lions attackers to just four shots on goal in the second half, with Scharnitzky saving each one successfully.

Strong second half adjustments were not enough to overcome tonights New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent, however. With the loss, Coast Guard falls to 4-5-1 (1-3-0 in NEWMAC) while Emerson advances to 6-2-2 (3-0-0 in NEWMAC).

The Bears will look to continue to make those adjustments and put on a show for their families on Parent's Weekend this Saturday, October 8th, 2022. They will play Clark University at 12pm EST in their annual Pink Game, recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
