Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The United States Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team fell on Saturday afternoon to #21 MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
The Engineers used a surge in the second half to beat the Bears 4-0. Karenna Geoff led the way for the nationally ranked power with five points on the day, including an unassisted goal to open up the scoring in the contest. She would add a second goal off an assist from Meagan Rowlett who also scored in the second half.
Coast Guard had limited opportunities on the offensive end of the field. They had four shots on the afternoon, but managed to put three of them on goal. However, both MIT goalkeepers, Ava Gillikin and Lauren Castle, were up to the challenge, stopping all three.
Renae Sanchez, Kelly Wade, and Alexandra Murphy all put goals on net, while Emily Scharnitzky returned between the pipes. Scharnitzky performed well, recording eight saves on the afternoon.
At the half, the Engineers led the Bears 1-0 and felt like a manageable game moving into the second frame. MIT came out with a balanced attack and was able to capitalize right away in the second half, just 2:34 into the restart. Their consistent pressure and shot volume played dividends, scoring again in the 60th and 87th minutes.
Head Coach Susan Grant understands the importance of these last few remaining games. She had this to say:
"We had a strong first half and were hoping to keep that momentum into the second half. However our defensive mistakes allowed for several MIT goals in the second and took us out of our rhythm. It's now time to refocus and get prepared for an important NEWMAC game against Mount Holyoke on Wednesday."
With the loss, Coast Guard falls to 5-8-2 (2-5-1 NEWMAC), while MIT improves to 13-4-1 (7-1-1 NEWMAC). The Bears return to the field on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022 at 6pm EST when they play NEWMAC opponent Mount Holyoke at home on Nitchman Field.
