Women's Soccer Suffers Setback to Wheaton

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- Despite an offensive onslaught of an attack in the first half, Coast Guard suffered a setback to Wheaton College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears put up a staggering twenty-two shots in today's contest, a season high, and scored the opening goal of the game just seven minutes into the contest. Junior Chase Merrick landed a strike into the back of the net from 35 yards out on an assisted shot from the right side. The energy behind Merrick's goal was high and the shots continued to rain down in the Lyons defensive zone. However, it would be Wheaton that would ultimately crack the code and reap the benefits of a high shot volume.

Wheaton would go on to score the next four goals of the game, spanning both the first and second half. The Lyons were the beneficiary of a penalty kick goal to open up the scoring in the second half. The ball skirted just past the outstretched arms of Coast Guard goalkeeper, Emily Scharnitzky

Coast Guard continued to fight hard through the entire game. With less than five minutes to play, Riley Vicinanzo connected with Karagan Bulger who netted her fourth goal of the season. Wheaton would respond with one final goal to end the game with a final score of 5-2.

Despite the loss, head coach Susan Grant saw a lot from her team today. She had this to say:

"We had a lot of opportunities to score today, and we didn't capitalize on those chances. At the end of the day, we need to limit other teams opportunities on goal, as well as offensively find the back of the net."

Coast Guard falls to 5-6-2 (2-4-1 in the NEWMAC) with just four games left to play before a potential play-off push. They play next at Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday, October 19th, 2022 at 6pm EST.
