Box Score BOSTON, Mass -- The Bears lost on the road Saturday afternoon to Emerson, 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-20) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the win, Emerson improves to 10-1 (3-1 NEWMAC), and the Bears fall to 11-5 (2-3 NEWMAC).
Senior Noelle Tursky led the Bears with eight kills, followed by sophomore Shannon Shaw with seven. Tursky and Maeve Duffin each had 11 assists. Duffin also added three aces, and Vickie Mancine and Kaela France each had two. France and Duffin led the defense with seven digs apiece, followed by Carmen Zipf with six and Tursky with five. Freshmen Allie Wildsmith and Sarah Somer had four and three blocks, respectively.
The Bears battled to 6-6 in set one, before Caroline Bond of the Lions went on a serving run that left Coast Guard searching for any way to get a point. It was all Emerson, with the lead at 20-7. Mancine was able to grab a few back from the Lions with two aces in a row. However, the lead proved too much for the Bears, and they lost set one, 25-11.
In set two, Coast Guard kept it close, tying the score at 11 after Bond went on another serving run. Kills by Tursky and Somer kept the Bears alive, and an ace from Duffin brought the score to 16-14, Emerson. The Bears got a point here and there, but it was all Emerson, and the Bears lost the set, 25-17.
Set three still had the Bears neck and neck with the Lions, thanks to kills from Shaw, Wildsmith, and Elizabeth Atkinson early on. With the score 5-7 Emerson, Shaw got a kill from Tursky to bring the Bears back within one. However, Anna Phillips went on a serving run with three kills in a row from Amelia Combs, giving the Lions the 13-6 lead. Coast Guard got a few points from France's serve and a kill by Somer, but then Shea McGovern served and got four straight for the Lions, giving them the 22-13 lead. Duffin grabbed two aces to bring the Bears back within five at 22-17. Mancine also served well to set up kills by Tursky from Duffin to bring the score to 24-20. However, Emerson closed out the set and match with the 25-20 win.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, October 4 at 7 PM at home as they take on Mount Holyoke College in continued NEWMAC action.
