Springfield Sweeps Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Coast Guard was held to just 10 hits in the two games as Springfield swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader beating the Bears 3-0 in the opener and 6-0 in game two.

The Pride improve to 6-2 overall and in conference play while the Bears drop to 6-4 overall and in the NEWMAC.

The Bears close out the regular season at WPI on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.

GAME ONE – SPRINGFIELD 3, COAST GUARD 0
Gillian Kane allowed just three hits over six innings as the Pride won the opener 3-0.

The Pride got all the runs they would need in the first on an RBI ground out by Kayla Stavn before an RBI single by Sara Mulligan.

Coast Guard had the bases loaded with no outs in the third, but the Bears got some tough luck as Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo lined in a double play to keep the Bears off the board.

The Bears had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but back-to-back line outs ended the threat.

Springfield added a run in the sixth on RBI double by Lucy Puskas.

Isabelle Shroyer (3-2) allowed a pair of earned runs and five hits over six innings to take the loss. Natalie Rodriguez pitched a perfect seventh in her debut in the circle this season.

Yoshioka Montalvo and Selena Serna each doubled in the loss for Coast Guard.

GAME TWO – SPRINGFIELD 6, COAST GUARD 0

Ashley Pugliese fired a six hitter and struck out seven leading the Pride in the nightcap.

The Pride scored all four runs in the second without the ball leaving the infield. The Pride loaded the bases on a walk, error on a bunt and an infield single. The first two runs came on back-to-back bases loaded walks before a hit by pitch gave Springfield a 3-0 lead. Lucy Puskas added an RBI infield single to push the lead to 4-0.

Christina D'Ambro's RBI double in the sixth made the score 5-0 before a sacrifice fly by Stavn added the final run of the game.

Shroyer (3-3) worked five innings allowing three earned runs and took the loss for Coast Guard. Rodriguez threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit.

Julia Breidenthal had two hits to lead Coast Guard.
