Bears Sweep Emerson to Stay Unbeaten

NEW LONDON, Conn.  – Coast Guard rallied from an early four run deficit in the opener and freshman Isabelle Shroyer fired one-hitter in game two as the Bears swept Emerson 10-4 and 8-0 in five innings in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

The Bears improve to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Emerson drops to 0-4 overall and in conference play.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host travel to Babson for a doubleheader at noon.

GAME ONE: COAST GUARD 10, EMERSON 4

Coast Guard exploded for eight runs in the fifth as the Bears erased an early 4-0 deficit and won the opener 10-4.

The Bears trailing 4-2 in the fifth sent 13 batters to the plate and had seven hits in the inning. Coast Guard took the lead on a two-run double that was rocketed off of pitcher Calli Pratt into center giving the Bears a 5-4 lead.

Isabelle Shroyer followed with a two-run single pushing the lead to 7-4 which chased Pratt, who started for the Lions.

Christine Carey added an RBI single, Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo drew a bases loaded walk and Katie Becker's sacrifice fly would give the Bears a 10-4 lead.

Emerson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first as Mary Kuckowski and Makenzie Killough had RBI singles in the inning for the Lions. Three of the runs were unearned.

Hope Drake Duval drew a bases loaded walk in the second before the Bears added another when Maggie Perez scored following an infield fly pop up cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Pratt (0-2) held the Bears at bay through the first four innings allowing just the two runs on two hits before the huge fifth inning. She was charged with five earned run on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Amanda Moore (2-0) went the distance for the Bears as she scattered eight hits and allowed just one earned run, walked three and struck out eight to get the win.

Yoshioka-Montalvo and Serna each had two hits in the win.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 8, EMERSON 0 (5 INNINGS)

Isabelle Shroyer fired a one-hitter and Katie Becker had two hits and drove in three runs leading Coast Guard to the 8-0 win.

Shroyer, who threw a three-hit shutout in her collegiate debut last week, walked one and fanned three to get the win in this afternoon. The only hit she allowed was a leadoff single by Claire Overton in the third inning. She has 12 scoreless innings to begin her collegiate career.

The Bears got all they runs they would need in the first on an RBI single by Becker before Mariah Dewey drove in a run with a ground out for a 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard blew the game wide open scoring six times in the second on five consecutive singles all with two outs. Perez singled to start the inning and three batters later Carey singled to load the bases.

Yoshiko-Montalvo, Becker, Serna all had RBI singles and then Julia Breidenthal's two-run single gave the Bears an 8-0 lead.

Carey and Becker each had two hits in the win for Coast Guard.

Neely Eddleston (0-2) allowed eight runs, just two earned in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
