Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshmen Amanda Moore and Isabelle Shroyer each earned complete game wins and the Coast Guard offense provided plenty of firepower with 21 runs and 29 hits as the Bears swept Clark 11-5 and 10-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader to open the 2021 season and give interim head coach Arielle Cooper her first two collegiate coaching wins.
Sophomore Mariah Dewey had a huge opening day as she went 4 for 5 in each game and finished the day with three doubles, two homers, five RBI's, and six runs scored.
Dewey hit safely in seven consecutive at bats as she had four straight hits to close out the game one win including a pair of homers to close out the win and then roped three straight doubles to start the second game.
Sophomore Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo had six hits and drove in four on the day while freshman Christine Carey added five hits in the sweep for the Bears.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Emerson in a doubleheader at noon.
GAME ONE: COAST GUARD 11, CLARK 5
Dewey hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs while Yoshioka Montalvo was 4 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored in the come-from-behind win.
Moore allowed allowed six hits, four earned runs, walked four and struck out 11 in her collegiate debut to pick up the win.
Freshman Julia Breidenthal had two hits including a homer in her first collegiate game while Carey also had two hits as Coast Guard had 16 hits in the opener.
Samantha Restrepo-Stier was 3 for 4 with a two run homer in the first for Clark. Isabella DiOrio took the loss for the Cougars as she allowed six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Clark led 4-2 until Coast Guard took the lead with three runs in the fourth as Dewey delivered an RBI single, Carey followed with an RBI double and Yoshioka Montavlo's single gave Coast Guard a 5-4 lead.
Breidenthal hit a solo homer to center in the fifth to make the score 6-4 and the Bears added three more in the sixth on a solo homer by Dewey an RBI single by Yoshioka Montalvo and an unearned run pushed the lead to 9-4.
Dewey would add her second homer in as many innings, a two-run shot to left in the seventh to close the scoring for the Bears.
GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 10, CLARK 0
Shroyer fired a three-hit shutout with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in the collegiate debut for the complete game victory. She allowed just three singles, two of those in the third inning when Clark left the bases loaded.
The Bears offense picked up right where it left off in the nightcap scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second for a 4-0 lead.
Yoshioka Montalvo had an RBI single in the first before and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Breidenthal to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Yoshioka Montalvo had another RBI single and Katie Becker followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Dewey would rip her third double of the game and score on an error to make the score 5-0 in the fourth.
Carey's RBI double in the sixth gave the Bears a 6-0 lead and Coast Guard added four runs in the seventh as Lillia Farlow's first career hit, a single, drove in a run, Dewey added an RBI single before Carey's two-run single closed the scoring.
DiOrio also took the loss for Clark in the nightcap as she allowed five earned runs in six innings.
