Merchant Marine Captures Secretaries' Cup

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Ian Blankenship had 280 yards of total offense and two touchdowns as rushed for 154 and threw for 126 as Merchant Marine captured the Secretaries' Cup with a 49-14 win over host Coast Guard.

The Mariners improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC and await word on a bowl bid while the Bears finish 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference. It marked the final game for the Bears 10 seniors.

Blankenship carried 30 times for 154 yards and was 5 of 9 for 126 yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Mariners.

Merchant Marine finished with 561 yards of total offense, 435 of those on the ground while Coast Guard had 279 yards, 213 passing.

Joe Armentrout was 22 of 36 for 213 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Coast Guard. Jared Colletti led the Bears on the ground with 13 carries for 59 yards while Cody Fidler closed out his career with seven receptions for 77 yards to lead the team.

Merchant Marine scored touchdowns on its first four drives and led 21-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at the half as the Mariners had 345 yards in the first half (256 rushing).

Alec Kiernan and Matthew Savard had rushing touchdowns in the first quarter while Blankenship threw a 45-yard touchdown to Talsen Smith for a 21-0 lead.

Brian McGovern's 12-yard touchdown run as the only points in the second quarter.

Coast Guard would get on the board on its first possession of the third quarter when Armentrout threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tafari Wall to make the score 28-7. The score was setup when Ryan Vigo recovered a fumble at the Mariner 27-yard line.

Blankenship threw a 37-yard touchdown to McGovern and backup quarterback Jeremiah Wang had a 1-yard run in the fourth pushing the lead to 49-7.

Armentrout threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Colletti with six seconds left to close the scoring.

Michael Palermo led the Bears with 10 tackles in the final game of his career.
