Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Lilly Edwards had a team-high 14 kills as MIT spoiled Coast Guard's Senior Day beating the Bears 3-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match, the final game of the regular season.
MIT, ranked 19th nationally, improves to 23-3 overall and 9-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears finish the regular season 16-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Coast Guard is the third seed in the NEWMAC tournament and will host a quarterfinal on Tuesday night at 7:00 against Clark.
Sophia Galdamez led Coast Guard with 18 kills while Amanda Dake had 16 kills and 16 digs for the Bears. Kaela France led the way with 22 digs while Noelle Tursky had 45 assists, 14 digs, and eight kills.
Coast Guard fought off a set point in the first trailing 25-24, but the Bears won 28-26 on back-to-back kills by Tursky.
MIT jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the second and never trailed. The Engineers scored the last five points for the 25-17 win.
Coast Guard led 17-12 in the third before MIT cut the deficit to 19-18. The Bears responded with three straight for a 22-18 lead and won 25-21.
The Bears fought off four straight-set points in the fourth before MIT forced a fifth set with the 25-23 win.
The Engineers jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the fifth. Coast Guard would score six of the next eight to cut the deficit 12-8. MIT scored three of the final four for the 15-9 win.
