NORTHAMPTON, Mass. --  Coast Guard swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opening doubleheader at Smith as the Bears outlasted the Pioneers 9-8 in the opener and scored 10 runs in the top of the first of the nightcap and won 16-4 in five innings  to complete the sweep.

Courtney McKenna had six hits including three doubles and drove in eight runs in the sweep for Coast Guard.

The Bears sweep a doubleheader for the first time all year after splitting the first six twin bills of the season. Coast Guard improves to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC while Smith drops to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when they host Wesleyan in a doubleheader at 3:00.

GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 9, SMITH 8

Kayla Sowers' RBI double in the sixth broke an 8-8 tie and the Bears outlasted Smith 9-8 in the back-and-forth opener.

McKenna had two hits and drove in four runs while Sowers had two hits and two RBI's for Coast Guard in the win.

Julia Ferris (5-3) got the win in relief as she worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, three earned runs and fanned four.

McKenna drove in a run on a ground out to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first before Smith tied it in the second.

The Bears scored four times in the third to take a 5-1 lead as Charlee Kraiss had an RBI triple, McKenna added an RBI double and Noelle Greenwood and Sowers drove in runs on ground balls.

Smith quickly responded with four in the home half of the third to tie the game 5-5.

Coast Guard regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Claire Hurley before McKenna added a two-run single for an 8-5 lead.

The Pioneers pulled even again in the bottom of the inning.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 16, SMITH 4 (5 INNINGS) 

Coast Guard exploded for 10 runs in the top of the first and completed the sweep with a 16-4 win in five innings,

McKenna was 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI's, Hattman was 3 for 3 with a double while Kraiss had two hits and drove in a career-high five runs and Hurley added a pair of hits to lead the Bears in the nightcap.

In the 10 run first, the Bears had seven hits. Kraiss had a two-run single, Audrey Bartz ,Carly Hattman and Julia Ferris had RBI singles while McKenna added a two-run double. Greenwood and Kraiss also drew a bases loaded walks in the ten run outburst.

Smith would get four back in the bottom of the first.

The Bears would get that back and more as they tallied five runs in the second to take a 15-4 lead.

Kraiss had her second two-run single of the game and McKenna added her second two-run double while Kelli Franza added an RBI single in the second inning.

Sydney Arendt (3-3)went the distance and allowed five hits and one earned run to pick up the win for Coast Guard.
