Hurley Leads Bears to Secure No. 2 Seed with Win Over Wheaton

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior Claire Hurley scored a hat trick to lead Coast Guard women's soccer to a 3-0 victory over Wheaton on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in the regular season finale. The Bears have secured the second seed in the NEWMAC tournament, the highest seed in program history and will host the quarterfinal on Tuesday, November 5 against the No. 7 seed Babson.

The Bears finish the regular season with an 8-9-1 overall record and 6-3-1 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton finishes the regular season at 8-5-4 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play.

With her hat trick, Hurley is now the Bears all-time leader in points with 85 and ties the all-time record in goals at 33 with Hilary Allegretti '01.

Hurley tallied her first goal of the game in the 10th minute as she fired a shot from just outside the box under the crossbar to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

In the 33rd minute, Hurley picked up a rebound off a shot from freshman Anna Carleton for her second goal of the game and a 2-0 lead.

Hurley scored her third of the game in the final minute of the first half as she got the ball outside of the box and chipped it right over Wheaton goalkeeper Alexa Barbagallo.

Coast Guard had a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Sarah Schollenberger made four saves in her third consecutive shutout with an 8-7-1 record. Wheaton senior goalkeeper Barbagallo made 10 saves for the Lyons and is 8-5-4 on her season.
