McGuire Leads Bears to NEWMAC Victory

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Abby McGuire scored the lone goal of the game, leading Coast Guard women's soccer to its fourth straight win, a 1-0 victory over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game. The Bears improve to 6-6 overall and stay unbeaten at 4-0 in conference play, their best start in NEWMAC play in program history. The Lyons drop to 2-9-1 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

After a scoreless first half, McGuire put away her second goal of the season off a header on a corner kick from senior Claire Hurley in the 64th minute.

The Bears outshot the Lyons, 37-5 and had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Schollenberger (6-4) made two saves to record her third shutout of the season for the Bears. Junior goalkeeper Maria-Lucia Delgado had seven saves in the loss for the Lyons.

The Bears are on the road on Saturday, October 12 at Babson in NEWMAC action at 2:00 PM.
