Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Angelou Dunton registered the 1,000th kill of her career as Coast Guard fought off a pair of match points in the fourth set and rallied to beat in town rival and host Connecticut College 3-2 in a non-conference thriller.
Dunton becomes the 12th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 kill mark as she had 12 kills in the win. She now has 1,003 career kills and she is also 15th all-time at the Academy with 976 digs.
The Bears won by scores of 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 15-13.
Amanda Dake had a match-high 15 kills for Coast Guard while Mary Sweet added 11 kills for the Bears. Noelle Tursky had a career-high seven aces and team-high 29 assists while Heather Miller had a career and team-high 19 digs in the win.
Coast Guard, snaps a two-game skid, beats Conn. College for the sixth straight time and improves to 15-7 on the season while the Camels dropped their sixth straight to fall to 6-12.
Conn. College won the opening set 25-17 as the Camels scored seven of the final eight points breaking open a slim 18-16 lead. The Bears were hurt by five service errors and hit just .077 in the first set.
Coast Guard would use a 10-2 spurt including six straight taking a 20-11 lead in the second set. The Camels would later make things interesting using a 7-1 run to make the score 23-21 and they would fight off a pair of set points before falling 25-23.
The Camels led 8-6 in the third before Coast Guard ran off five straight for an 11-8 advantage. The Bears held a 17-13 before Conn. scored six of the next seven to take the lead 19-18. The Camels, trailing 20-19, would score even six of the final eight points for the 25-22 win.
The Bears held a 22-19 lead in the fourth looking to force a fifth and deciding set before the Camels exploded for five straight to take a 24-22 lead, one point from the match win. Coast Guard fought off a pair of match points scoring five of the final six points to win 27-25 and force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, a set in which the score was tied nine times the last at 13-13. Conn. College led 13-11 before the Bears scored the final four points to complete the back from behind win.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Smith in a NEWMAC game at 7:00.
