Bears Earn Second Win of the Season Topping Mariners 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard scored two first half goals to earn their second win of the season topping Mitchell 2-0 in nonconference action Tuesday night.

With the win, the Bears improve to 2-5-2 while the Mariners drop to 2-5-0.

Senior Greg Burnham scored his second goal of the season while junior Taka Lendon registered his first career goal. Sophomore Daniel Taglianetti registered his second assist of the season.

Mitchell had the first opportunity of the game as sophomore Quinn Outerbridge received a cross from the left side with space in the Coast Guard penalty box. Outerbridge touched the service towards goal but but it just wide of the opposite post ending the attack.

The Bears settled in and found their first goal of the game Taglianetti sent in a corner kick from the right side. Burnham rose up in the center of the box and drove a header into the back of the net with 7:36 on the clock.

Coast Guard looked headed to halftime with a one goal advantage before senior Griffin Klages played Lendon into the attacking third. Lendon cut the ball back on two defender in the Mariners penalty box and rifled a shot into the left corner for the 2-0 lead at intermission.

Mitchell had the best opportunity of the second half as Chad-Wayne Hopkins headed a free kick towards goal in the 59thminute. His header beat senior goalkeeper William Bragaw but went off the opposite post and back into play. Freshman Bryan Ramos one-time the rebound but sent it wide and out of play.

Bragaw (1-1-1) earns his first win of the season making one save.

Junior Seth Strader (2-5-0) made four saves allowing the two goal.

Coast Guard is back in action Saturday, September 29thwhen they travel to Norton, Massachusetts to take on the Wheaton Lyons in NEWMAC play. Opening kickoff is 1:00.
