Bears Fall in Five to Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Jen Donnelly had a match-high 17 kills to go with 11 digs leading Springfield to a 3-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

The Pride outlasted the Bears 19-25, 25-21, 25-11, 22-25, 15-12 to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Senior Hayley Kmetz added 11 kills and freshman Ashley Tanner had 10 kills and 11 digs in the win for the Pride. Freshman Sara Labadorf had a match-high 48 assists while senior Hannah Lozano led the way with a match-high 21 digs in the win.

Junior Angelou Dunton led Coast Guard with 14 kills and five service aces to go with 12 digs while sophomore Bridget Boyle added 13 kills. Sophomore Veronica Hine led Coast Guard with 14 digs while junior Makenna Martin had a team-high 27 assists.

The Bears led 13-12 in the opening set before scoring five of the next six points to take an 18-13 lead. Coast Guard leading 21-18 would score four of the final five points for the 25-19 win.

In the second set, the Pride would jump out to a 14-5 lead. Coast Guard, trailing 17-7 would run off eight straight behind the serving of Dunton to make the score 17-15, but the Pride would score three of the next four and win 25-21.

The Pride dominated the third set as they led 10-7 before scoring 12 of the next 14 points to take a 22-9 lead en route to the 25-11 win.

Coast Guard would force a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth. The Bears led 11-10 and scored five straight. The Pride rallied late scoring four straight to pull to within 21-20, but the Bears forced the deciding set.

In the fifth, Springfield scored three straight, the final two on service aces from Labadorf, to open up a 12-8 lead and held on for the win.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Babson in a NEWMAC match at noon.
