Despite Sweep of Doubles Play; Bears Fall in NEWMAC Semifinals

BABSON PARK, Mass. --  Third-seeded Coast Guard swept the doubles play, but dropped five of the six singles matches, as second-seeded Babson beat the Bears 5-4 in in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament semifinals.

The Bears, making their fifth straight NEWMAC semifinal appearance, finish the season 8-5.

Juniors Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips won 8-5 at #1 doubles, the freshmen duo of Kyle Fager and Chris Lansing cruised to an 8-1 win at #2 doubles while senior Mike Melampy and sophomore Adam Bahney were 8-4 winners at #3 doubles as the Bears took a 3-0 lead into singles action.

The Bears dropped a pair of singles matches before Hackett won 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at #1 singles to give Coast Guard a 4-2 lead needing just one more win to clinch the victory.

Babson would however in the final three singles matches to beat Coast Guard for the ninth straight time.

Senior John Hu dropped the first set 7-5 at #2 singles before winning 6-1 to force a third set, falling 6-2.
