Bears Drop NEFC Opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.— Senior Sam Pascale carried 21 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns and junior James Dawson had 203 total yards and two touchdowns leading Salve Regina to a 48-10 win over Coast Guard in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) opener for both teams.

Salve Regina scored on five of its first six possessions and led 41-0 at halftime. The Seahawks had 456 yards in the first half (332 rushing) and finished with  601 total yards, 462 of those on the ground. Coast Guard which was held to 25 first half yards had 115 total yards in the game.

Dawson had all 203 total yards of his yards in the first half, 151 rushing and a 52-yard reception with a pair of rushing touchdowns while Pascale rushed for 148 yards and three scores in the opening half.

Coast Guard had upset the Seahawks 21-20 in the NEFC opener last season.

The Seahawks, who improved to 3-0 on the season, scored on their first three possessions and led 21-0 with 9:19 left in the first quarter running just ten plays from scrimmage in that span. Dawson had a 61-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game and a 39-yard run on his second carry to get his afternoon started.

Dawson and Pascale each had a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter as Salve led 28-0 after the first quarter.  The Seahawks had 265 total yards in the opening quarters, 193 on the ground while the Bears had 20 total yards in the first quarter.

Coast Guard senior quarterback Derek Victory was 10 of 25 for 52 yards and was intercepted for the first time this season snapping a streak of 248 straight passes, dating back to last year, without throwing an interception.

Sophomore Ethan Goldcamp (10 of 22, 65 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) replaced Victory on the first possession of the second quarter with the Bears trailing 35-0 and played the remainder of the first half and returned in the fourth quarter.

Pascale added a 56-yard touchdown run with 5:23 left in the first half as Salve led 41-0.

Coast Guard got on the board when freshman Patrick Crowley booted his first career field goal, a 26-yarder, with 8:42 left in the third quarter. The score was set up when freshman Michael Goldsworthy recovered a fumbled punt at the Salve 26-yard line.

Pascale would scamper 78 yards for a touchdown on the Seahawks first play from scrimmage in the second half making the score 48-3 with 8:16 left in the third quarter. It was Pascale's only carry of the second half.


Goldcamp threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to junior Darius Adams and Crowley added the extra point making the score 48-10 with 11:46 left.


Salve which entered the game allowing just three rushing yards on 50 carries in the first two games
held Coast Guard to negative two yards rushing on 21 carries.

Coast Guard, which drops to 1-3 overall, is back in action next week when the Bears host Maine Maritime on Saturday at 1:30 as part of Homecoming Weekend.
