Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass. – Caroline Fairbanks hit a walk off solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, her second of the game, as Wheaton rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the fifth inning to win the opener over Coast Guard 6-5 and completed the sweep with a 11-5 win in the nightcap of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.
Wheaton improves to 11-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play while Bears drop to 7-17 overall and 0-6 in the NEWMAC.
GAME ONE: Wheaton 6, Coast Guard 5
Fairbanks hit two home runs including a walk off solo home run giving the Lyons a 6-5 victory over the Bears.
Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich went 3-4 with three RBI's, a run scored and a double for Coast Guard while junior Cheorkee Strickland was 1-4 with an RBI and sophomore Casey Cruzpino was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Fairbanks was 3-4, including the two home runs, three RBI's and two runs scored. Madeline Hatch was 1-3 with a runs scored while Rebecca Seifert tacked on an RBI. Emily Bouthillette was 1-2 with a home run and two RBI's.
Coast Guard held a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth led by a three-run double by Hvozdovich in the fifth plating freshmen Emily Hogan, Malia Hindle and Sharayah Simco. Strickland drove in Hvozdovich with a single through the left side.
Wheaton however would tie the score in the bottom of the fifth led by two, two-run home runs by Fairbanks and Bouthillette.
The Lyons won it in the bottom of the seventh as Fairbanks stepped in with one out and knocked her sixth home run of the season.
Jillian Rocha (1-2) picked up her first win of the season in relief as she worked the final 2 1/3 inning and allowed just two hits while fanning one.
Senior Sarah Sorensen (4-13) went the distance and took the loss for the Bears.
GAME TWO: Wheaton 11, Coast Guard 5
Wheaton exploded for seven runs in the third inning to erase a 3-2 deficit en route to the 11-5 win.
In the third, Rebecca Seifert's three-run homer highlighted the seven run outburst as the Lyons took a commanding 9-3 lead. Kelly Welch also had a two-run double down the right field line before the Siefert blast to center.
Fairbanks hit her third homer of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the first to give the Lyons an early 2-0 lead.
Coast Guard took the lead in the third as Hvozdovich singled and came around on an error before RBI singles by freshman Hayden Short and Cruzpino gave the Bears a 3-2 lead.
The Bears added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Short and Strickland to make the score 9-5.
The Lyons would answer right back with two runs in the home half to close the scoring.
Allison Cox (5-2) went the first four innings and got the win while freshman MacKenzie Everett (2-3) worked 2 2/3 innings and took the loss.
Emily Dow came on in relief for the Bears and pitched 3 1/3 innings of solid relief allowing two hits and two runs.
Senior Hannah Ingerson was 3 for 4 with a double for the Bears while Hvozdovich and Short each had two hits in game two.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday at Babson in a NEWMAC doubleheader at noon.
