NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard won its Spring opener in convincing fashion not dropping a set in a 9-0 win over archrival Merchant Marine and with the win secured the Superintendent's Trophy for the second straight season.
The Bears now lead the Superintendent's Trophy 11-6 with just four sports remaining to be contested in the 2015-16 season.
Mark Guentert won a 6-4, 6-4 match at #1 singles, Tom Hackett won easily 6-0, 6-0 at #2, Robert Renfrow was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at #3, Weston Fortna registered a 6-0, 6-4 win at #4 singles, Mike Melampy was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at #5 singles and John Hu won convincingly 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles for the Bears.
In doubles action, Guentert and Fortna won 8-2 at #1, Ben Errington and Hackett were 8-1 winners at #2 while Melampy and Jack Phillips recorded an 8-2 win at #2 doubles for Coast Guard.
The Bears improve to 5-1 on the season and are back in action on Saturday when they host Brandeis at 1:00.
