Bears Win First NEWMAC Game of the Year

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. - A first half goal by sophomore Luke Telang held up for a Coast Guard 1-0 win against Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

With the win the Bears snap a five game losing streak, improving to 2-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in NEWMAC play. The Cougars drop to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference competition.

Coast Guard tested sophomore goalkeeper Connor Maguire early in the game as freshman Noah Harper sent a cross in from the right side to the center of the Clark penalty box. Senior Lucas Benedetto challenged Maguire for the cross but the goalkeeper was able to punch the ball out of danger.

Harper next lined up for a corner kick which he played into the Cougars box. The ball bounced before reaching senior Ricky Davies who fired a shot towards goal, but was blocked by a Clark defender.

Benedetto looked to be in for the first goal of the game as he found space down the rights side and was in one on one with Maguire. Benedetto put a shot on goal but Maguire dove to his right and denied the shot.

Clark mounted an attack midway through the half as sophomore Alberto Polo-Herrera found junior Zack Blais on the left side. Blais took a touch and fired a hard shot at freshman goalkeeper William Bragaw. Bragaw knocked down the shot and collected the rebound before the Cougars could pounce on the rebound.

The Bears broke through finally at the 21:19 mark when sophomore Ryan Dandan found Telang at the top of the Clark box. Telang then hit a shot to the left corner that curled away from a diving Maguire and gave Coast Guard a 1-0 lead.

The game was almost 2-0 before the half when junior Kyle Phillips tracked down a errant clearance by the Cougars. Phillips took a touch and then fired a low shot the ricocheted off a Clark defender catching Maguire moving the wrong direction. The ball however rolled just to the outside of the post going out for a corner kick.

In the second half the Bears continued to create opportunities as junior Brad McNell worked forward from his left back position and sent a cross to the back post. Freshman Patrick Palermo-Re slid in for the cross but could not catch up to it as it was just out of his reach.

Freshman Garrett Magill later in the half drove a corner kick into the Cougars box. Sophomore Austin Read rose up and flicked a header to the back post that hit the crossbar and out of play.

Midway through the second half junior Nick Roberts beat his defender to the touch line and hit a pass back towards the penalty spot for freshman Garrett Magill. Magill took a one touch shot but drove the ball over the bar.

Bragaw earned his first win and shutout of his collegiate career facing three total shots and making one save on one shot on goal. His season record is now 1-4.

Maguire dropped his third decision of the year (1-3-1) facing nine shots, four on goal, making three saves.

The Bears are back in action this Wednesday when they host cross town foe Mitchell. Kickoff is 7:30.
