Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – T.J. Tutone threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns and Catholic outscored Coast Guard 26-3 in the second half en route to a 40-24 win over the Bears in a non-conference game.
It was a home game of sorts as Coast Guard had close to 1,000 fans on hand to cheer on the Bears in Washington, D.C., the site of Coast Guard headquarters.
Catholic improves to 2-1 on the season while the Bears drop to 1-2 in their final non-conference game of the year.
Tutone was 35 of 58 while Coast Guard junior quarterback Derek Victory was 34 of 59 for 306 yards with one touchdown.
Sophomore tight end Cody Bain had career-highs with nine receptions for 135 yards along with his first career touchdown reception.
Catholic finished with 566 yards of total offense while Coast Guard had 333 yards. The Bears, who rushed for just 13 yards last week, were held to 27 yards on 24 carries.
Lucas Morley had 13 receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals.
"We had our chances and we played well at times, but the mistakes hurt us," said Coast Guard head coach Bill George. "We didn't start off on right foot at the beginning of the game and again at the beginning of the second half. The three penalties on our first drive of the second half and then fumbling the kickoff early in the second half really hurt us. The guys played well, but mistakes can come back to haunt you."
Senior Paul Puddington had a 40-yard interception return to tie the game 7-7 with 5:46 left in the first quarter. It was the first interception of his career.
Senior Kyle Wood recovered a fumble on the Catholic 10-yard line and on the next possession and on the next play senior Jordan Groff had a 10-yard run for a 14-7 lead.
Victory threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Bain with 2:28 left in the half as the Bears took a 21-14 lead into the half.
Catholic had 306 yards of total offense in the first half, 185 passing while the Bears finished with 158 total yards in the opening half, 135 of those in the air.
The Cardinals scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions of the first half turning a 21-14 halftime deficit into a 34-24 lead as the Bears added a 27-yard field goal by Tyler Henning in the third quarter.
Senior Jordan Groff added eight receptions for 56 yards while classmate Carter Provost had six catches for 54 yards in the loss.
Senior Joe Rizzardi had a huge game on defense as he finished with 17 tackles, nine solo while senior Kyle Wood finished ten tackles.
"It was a wonderful atmosphere here today, I got to see a lot of former players from all eras and it was great," said George. "I was surprised at how many people we actually had here today. It was great to get that support from the people down here at headquarters."
Coast Guard will open New England Football Conference (NEFC) play next week as the Bears host Salve Regina on Parents' Weekend with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
