Bears Knock Off Vassar 5-4 in Season-Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Weston Fortna won his singles match and teamed with classmate Mark Guentert to win at #1 doubles leading Coast Guard to a season-opening 5-4 win over Vassar.

Vassar beat Coast Guard 9-0 last season.

The Bears #1 doubles team of co-captains Guentert and Fortna won 8-5 while the #2 doubles team of sophomore Benson Errington and freshman Tom Hackett registered a 8-3 win for the Bears as Coast Guard led 2-1 heading to singles competition.

Vassar won the top three singles matches, but Fortna took the #4 singles point after dropping the first set 7-5, he won 6-3 and his opponent was had to retire due to cramping.

Michael Melampy dropped the first set 7-6 before winning 6-3, 6-3 at #5 singles to clinch the match for the Bears as John Hu had already picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at #6 singles. Hackett played well in singles but lost in three sets after winning the opening set 6-2, he lost 6-3, 7-5.

Coast Guard will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Salve Regina at 4 p.m.
