SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Coast Guard swept the doubles matches to begin the day and the Bears beat Springfield 7-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match moved indoors due to rain.
Coast Guard won its third straight to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Bears #1 doubles team of Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna won 9-8 (7-3 in the tiebreak) while the #3 doubles team of John Hu and Townshend Hirst also won a tight 9-8 match, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
Robert Renfrow and Michael Melampy picked up a 8-3 win at #2 doubles.
In singles action, Melampy won at #4 singles (6-0, 6-2) while Hu won 6-2, 6-4 at #5 singles to clinch the victory as the Bears took a 5-0 lead.
Guentert won 7-5, 6-2 at #2 singles while Fortna picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles for the Bears.
The Pride won both #1 singles and #6 singles in super tiebreakers.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when they will host MIT in a NEWMAC match at 1 p.m.
