NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard did not drop a set in sweeping rival Merchant Marine 9-0 in a non-conference match played indoors at the Coast Guard Academy.
Junior Mark Guentert won # 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, classmate Robert Renfrow posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 singles and junior Weston Fortna was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at # 3 singles.
A trio of freshmen registered wins at singles for the Bears as Michael Melampy won 6-3, 6-1 at #4 singles, John Hu won 6-1, 6-2 at #5 and Benson Errington was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at #6.
Coast Guard won all three doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores with Guentert and Fortna winning at #1, Melampy and Errington winning #2 and Renfrow and Hu picking up the win at #3 doubles.
The Bears improve to 3-2 on the season and will play at Conn. College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. If the match needs to be moved indoors, it will be played at Coast Guard.
