Bears Lose in OT to Ranked Warriors

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - A goal by junior Tyler Jones in the first overtime gave Eastern Connecticut a 2-1 victory over Coast Guard in nonconference action.

With the loss the Bears fall to 5-11-1. The Warriors, who are ranked fourth in New England, are now 14-2-1 on the season.

Coast Guard pushed forward and pressured the back four of Eastern from the opening whistles. Freshman Noah Harper sent a cross in from the right side that found sophomore Ryan Dandan just inside the top of the box. Dandan sent a header towards goal but hit it wide.

Later on in the first half after a under hit goal kick by Eastern, Dandan collected the ball and passed it out wide to senior Lukas Benedetto. Benedetto served a cross to the front post and found junior Patrick Hanrahan who redirected the cross with his knee, but pushed the ball just to the outside of the right post.

The Warriors had their first opportunity of the half when senior Zane Lombardo found sophomore Xavier Doran at the top of the Bears penalty box. Doran held off a Coast Guard defender and managed to turn and take a shot that went wide of the right of the post.

Late in the first half freshman Patrick Palermo-Re hit a free kick from  just over the midfield line. The service found sophomore Austin Read at the opposite post who headed it back across the face of the goal. Benedetto got a shot off but was blocked and the ball was cleared out of danger.

The Warriors wasted little time in the second half taking a 1-0 lead as Coast Guard was unable to clear a corner out as the ball bounced to senior Cooper D'Ambrosio who stretched out to score his fourth goal of the season just over a minute into the second period.

The Bears continued to press as freshman Garrett Magill slotted a ball through to Benedetto on the right side of Eastern's penalty box. Benedetto ripped a shot towards the near post but a sprawling save by freshman goalkeeper Ryan Murphy kept the shot out and was cleared away by the Warriors defense.

Coast Guard took advantage of an Eastern handball in their own penalty box in the 88th minute as Benedetto stepped up and rifled a shot into the right corner of the net for his team leading fifth goal of the season and pushed the game to overtime.

Just under four minutes into the first overtime Doran hit a cross that was settled by Jones at the top of the Bears penalty box. Jones took a touch and put a shot on goal that deflected off a Coast Guard defender and into the back of the net for Jone's seventh goal of the season.

Sophomore Jake Sorenson (1-6) made one save on seven shots, three on goal.

Freshman Ryan Murphy (14-2-1) made four saves on seven shots, five on goal.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for a key NEWMAC game. Kickoff is 11:30.
