Benedetto Goal in OT Lifts Bears to Season-Opening Win

Box Score

GORHAM, MAINE – Junior Lukas Benedetto scored 2:38 into overtime leading Coast Guard to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Salve Regina at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Jake Weinshank from Salve Regina had the only goal of the first half in the 26th minute as the Seahawks led 1-0 at halftime.

Coast Guard senior tri-captain Matthew Bogdan tied the game in the 57th minute with sophomore Caelan Harshaw adding the assist.

Bendetto's goal in overtime gave Coast Guard its 11th win in the last 12 years in season openers. Senior tri-captain John Tarzian and freshman Austin Read assisted on the game-winning goal.

Senior Richie Burns made six saves in goal for Coast Guard, which outshot Salve Regina 14-11.

"It was a great start to the season for us, " said Coast Guard head coach Chris Parsons. "We gave up a quirky goal in the first half, but had the better of play and equalized in the second half, overall it was a solid performance."

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they take on Bridgewater State at the Southern Maine Invitational at 1 p.m.
